Who are you?

We are a Christian Campus Ministry called Chi (X) Alpha (A) Christian Fellowship (variations of our name include: Chi Alpha Campus Ministry, Chi Alpha, XA, USM XA, or Southern Miss XA). We do have greek letters, but we’re not a fraternity or sorority.

So, what does XA stand for?

In the Bible, the apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:20,

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.

Our movement finds its identity in this passage. We believe that God longs to have each and every person be reconciled or as we like to put it: connected to Himself, and that the way that re-connection happens is through the representation of his people. Each of us who takes on the identity of “Christian” becomes Christ’s ambassador – or christou apostoloi in Greek, which we shorten to the first letters “Chi” and “Alpha” or XA. So, yeah, that’s why we use the Greek words Chi Alpha or XA.

Ok, so what church are you?

We’re not a “church” and are supported by many churches and individuals from a variety of backgrounds. We are a ministry of the local churches and function within the campus community. We are open to all college students, regardless of your background. Lots of faith, no faith, little faith…it doesn’t matter. We want you to feel welcome regardless of where you are at in life. We do have a national office and are accountable to them – you can check out all that info at www.chialpha.com.  Want to know what we believe?  Click here to go directly to that part of our national site.

What is your purpose?

If we are all honest with ourselves, we all long for one thing: real, lasting relationships. At Southern Miss XA our purpose is “Making Connections for Life”!

Connect means “to cause to be associated with, as in a personal relationship”. We want everything we do to cause a personal connection with God and People! Relationships are key: they are the only thing that truly lasts!

How will you accomplish this?

Our mission statement is: We are a passionately-devoted, diverse, missional community of the Spirit—building lifelong followers of Jesus.

Our vision for this community is to: Connect. Grow. Send.  We reach out to students and connect them to other students in the community and to God.  Through our C-Groups (see below), we help students grow in these connections and become a true disciple.  And, finally we hope to send students back into the world as equipped Christians ready to help others make these same connections.

Our core values related to our vision are:

heart_square copyReal Community (Connect): We are made for community! We believe that the greatest transformation occurs when we are living in real community with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. That is why we consider the most important part of Chi Alpha to be our Connect Groups (C-Groups). When we connect with God and connect with others with our hearts, through real community, developing real relationships a healthy community exists.

brain_square copyReal Devotional life (Grow): Our desire is that every student would have a vibrant, personal relationship with God. We believe that a real devotional life is necessary to maintain a solid relationship with God. Through spending time in the Word, and communicating with God frequently, fervently, and with great faith, we can experience God and live the life we are called to live. Our minds were given to us by God for His purposes. We must engage a devotional life not just with our hearts, but our minds as well. We must practice disciplines, and this requires a decision and a plan.

feet_square copyReal Service (Send): We believe that every Christian has an outward responsibility and should play a role in global missions, relational evangelism, and social justice. In Chi Alpha, we provide students with opportunities to serve on all levels. It is not enough to have a heart for God and the mind to to discipline our lives…we must now be willing to put feet (or action) to these things.

When our hearts are engaged in community, when our minds are engaged in our devotional lives and when our feet are active in service – we are participating in the Great Commission and the work of building Gods Kingdom.

Ok, so how can I start getting connected?

✦ C-Groups:  We make it really simple to get connected in Chi Alpha – join a C-Group (that’s short for Connect Group)!  We believe that the best way to connect with others and God is in a small group setting.  So that is our main focus in Chi Alpha – getting students plugged into a C-Group. That is what we do and its what makes us unique from typical ministries who might focus on other things like large group meetings or other events.  Everything else we do can be discovered once you get connected in a C-Group.

What are C-Groups like?

I’m glad you asked!  C-Groups are small groups of men and women connecting through prayer, sharing, worshipping & studying God’s Word together.  They are gender specific so that you are able to open up as much or as little as you like. They are a great way to meet new students and learn about God in a safe environment. Plus you can encourage each other in prayer.  C-Groups are usually held in one of the on campus residence halls, but the times, days, locations and student leaders of our C-Groups change each semester. The best way to connect (I know we use that word a lot here) is follow the steps below:

First, we need to find out who you are.  Since we do not have a building on campus it can be a challenge to find us.  Click on the Connect page to let us know you stopped by this site, so that we can connect with you.  Once we get your information, we’ll do our best to plug you into a C-Group that fits your schedule right a way.

Second, you can check the calendar page on this website often to see a list of C-Groups.  We will do our best to keep it up to date.

Third, look for us on campus when we do these other activites:

XA LIVE:  This is our large group meeting held once a week.  Its on Wednesday Nights at 7 pm in Room 101 of the International Center. Here are some common ingredients of an XA LIVE: games, contests, praise and worship, prayer, a relevant message and lots of fun!

Connections Table:  You can find us on campus each week (usually Wednesdays in Shoemaker Square by the fountain) from around 11a-2p hanging out at a table connecting with students.  We sometimes do a question of the day or other activity, so feel free to stop by and say hi or work the table with us.

What else?

Although our main emphasis is C-Groups there are many other activities we do throughout the year.  We have weekly prayer, gatherings geared towards International students, retreats, conferences, missions trips, socials, community service and more! Most all of this happens through our C-Groups.  So don’t wait and get connected in one today by contacting us!  You can also check out our events on the calendar page of this site.
